The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Burgos, under the leadership of Honorable Mayor Delfin C. Comedis Jr., successfully conducted a three-day Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Training from March 11 to 13, 2026 at Bella Vista Resort, Naguilian, La Union. The initiative was spearheaded by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in coordination with the Department of Health Center for Health Development 1 and the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center.
The training gathered dedicated participants from various sectors who are committed to enhancing their capabilities in addressing mental health concerns, particularly during emergencies and disaster situations. It aimed to equip them with practical knowledge and effective strategies in responding to the emotional and psychological needs of individuals and communities experiencing stress, trauma and other psychosocial challenges.
Throughout the activity, participants engaged in discussions, workshops and collaborative exercises designed to deepen their understanding of mental health and strengthen their skills in providing appropriate psychosocial support. The training also served as a valuable platform for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas and fostering stronger collaboration among community workers and response teams.
By empowering frontliners and community service providers, the LGU continues to take proactive steps in promoting a more resilient and mentally healthy community. The initiative underscores the importance of integrating mental health awareness into disaster preparedness and response efforts.
A highlight of the event was the visit of Mayor Comedis, who personally met with the participants and expressed his full support for programs that prioritize mental health and well-being. In his message, the Mayor emphasized the significance of the training, noting that such opportunities enhance the participants’ ability to assist others facing emotional and psychological difficulties.
He also shared a meaningful reminder that simple gestures—such as offering a smile or performing small acts of kindness—can greatly impact a person’s mental health. According to the Mayor, these everyday actions contribute to building a more compassionate and supportive environment within the community.
The successful conduct of the MHPSS Training reflects the LGU’s ongoing commitment to holistic disaster preparedness—one that not only focuses on physical safety but also prioritizes mental and emotional well-being.
The LGU of Burgos extends its sincere gratitude to all participants, facilitators and partner agencies whose support and dedication made the activity a success. Through continued collaboration and shared responsibility, the municipality moves forward in building a community that is both disaster-resilient and mentally empowered.
